The Russian military says it has fended off a Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow that prompted authorities to briefly close one of the city's airports. Ukrainian authorities didn’t claim responsibility for the raid. Tuesday's attack, which follows previous similar raids on the Russian capital, comes after a mutiny launched by mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, which saw his Wagner troops approach Moscow in the biggest challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin in more than two decades. The Russian Defense Ministry said in the new incident four drones were downed by air defenses on the outskirts of Moscow and one was jammed and forced down. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said there were no casualties or damage.

Satellite images analyzed by The Associated Press show what appeared to be a newly built military-style camp in Belarus. A Belarusian guerrilla group has suggested it might be used to house fighters from Russian mercenary group Wagner. The images provided by Planet Labs PLC suggest that dozens of tents were erected at a former military base about 230 kilometers (142 miles) north of Ukraine's border. Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and his fighters escaped prosecution and were offered refuge in Belarus last week after they agreed to end what appeared to be an armed insurrection in Russia. The leader of the guerrilla group told the AP that construction of a site for Wagner fighters was underway.

Key players in events stemming from last weekend's armed rebellion in Russia include mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, the chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov and Gen. Sergei Surovikin. Prigozhin is the head of the Wagner Group, a private military contractor that has been a vital force fighting in Ukraine. He has criticized both Shoigu and Gerasimov, saying the way they conducted the fighting in Ukraine has been incompetent. Surovikin has longtime links to Prigozhin and was nicknamed “General Armageddon” by Western media for his brutal tactics leading Russian forces in Syria.

FILE - Ammunition are placed as Ukrainian soldiers take part in a military exercise at a military training camp in an undisclosed location in England, on March 24, 2023. When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Ukraine’s military was largely reliant on Soviet-era weaponry. While that arsenal helped Ukraine fend off an assault on the capital of Kyiv and prevent a total rout in the early weeks of the war, billions of dollars in military assistance has since poured into the country, including more modern Western-made weapons.
