Facing a 13-point deficit at home, the Missouri Western men’s basketball team overcame Nebraska-Kearney by a score of 83-78 on Thursday night.
After dropping a much-needed win against Newman on Wednesday night, the Griffon men sat at the 10th and final spot of the MIAA Tournament heading into their contest against the Lopers.
Nebraska-Kearney would give the Griffon men a tough fight as they led for 21:50. Led by graduate student forward Darrian Nebeker’s career high 30 points and 21 of those in the first half, the 5-21 Lopers were heading for victory until the Griffons had a counter punch in the second half. Western would outscore Nebraska-Kearney 54-40 in the second half, with the biggest difference coming from the free throw line where the Griffons shot 21-25 whereas the Lopers had seven total attempts and made five.
Junior forward for Western JaRon Thames had 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead the charge for Western’s comeback. Redshirt guard Julius Dixon scored 16 points whereas sophomore guard Taye Fields second double-double in the last three games with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Western will finish out their regular season on Saturday and look to punch their ticket to the conference tournament when they face Pitt State.
