Bishop LeBlond girls soccer is headed to its first ever state semifinals after defeating Barstow 2-1 in the Class 1 quarterfinals on Saturday.
Coming off of a highly intense, double overtime victory over Class 1 No. 1 Mid-Buchanan just nine days prior, the layoff proved to be plenty of time for the Golden Eagles to compose themselves for an even higher stakes game.
We just had to play and go in with the mindset that every team is the best team in the state, and so that’s the interpretation we went into this game with and we had that same mindset when we went to Mid-Buch. so that helped us a lot, that mindset,” LeBlond senior Tatum Studer said afterwards.
Neither team was able to get on the board in the first half though each team had their share of shots on the goal.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles would strike first blood. Freshman Kaitlyn Sego would find the back of the net in the 43rd minute to put LeBlond up 1-0. Not long after, the Golden Eagles found gold again in the 50th minute off a corner kick as freshman Kendall Cathcart placed the ball just in the right spot near the goal box for senior Tatum Studer. Studer’s initial attempt at a header goal was deflect, but right back to Studer’s dominate foot to kick the ball past the Barstow goalie to give LeBlond a 2-0 lead.
Barstow would eventually get on the board in the 66th minute to try and put the Golden Eagles on their heels at the deficit down to one. However, LeBlond’s defense would be just enough for the final 13:50 of the game to seal the victory.
“It feels amazing. It’s something I’ve always wanted. I didn’t know it was going to happen my freshman year, and I’m just excited to go, freshman Kaitlyn Sego said.
LeBlond will move on to play Father Tolton Catholic in the Class 1 state semifinals on June 2 in Fenton, Missouri.
