We’re still a month away from the St. Joseph Mustangs starting their season at Phil Welch Stadium, but that doesn’t mean the ball park isn’t being used. The stadium showcased a Class 4 District 16 match-up Tuesday as the Lafayette Fighting Irish took down the Chillicothe Hornets, 4-2.
The bats were hot early for the Irish, and Braton Rhodes-Wiggins kept the ball in the in-field during the first inning to bring in a run to put the first run on the board. In that same inning, a wild pitch from Chillicothe’s pitcher brought in another runner who was posted on first base, Irish led 3-0 after one.
Lafayette’s pitcher Brendon Bushong was having himself a first four innings, not allowing a run. There were moments that Chillicothe got into scoring positions, but some strikeouts mixed with some pick plays kept the Hornets off the board.
In the third, it would be another wild pitch from Chillicothe that allowed Rhodes-Wiggins to make it home standing up, pushing the lead to 4-0.
The Hornets would eventually find some offense, putting up two runs of their own, but it would be too little too late. The Fighting Irish will be back in action on Friday against Pleasant Hill.
