Lafayette Baseball

Lafayette senior Arthur Ortega slides home off a wild pitch from Chillicothe on Tuesday at Phil Welch Stadium.

We’re still a month away from the St. Joseph Mustangs starting their season at Phil Welch Stadium, but that doesn’t mean the ball park isn’t being used. The stadium showcased a Class 4 District 16 match-up Tuesday as the Lafayette Fighting Irish took down the Chillicothe Hornets, 4-2.

The bats were hot early for the Irish, and Braton Rhodes-Wiggins kept the ball in the in-field during the first inning to bring in a run to put the first run on the board. In that same inning, a wild pitch from Chillicothe’s pitcher brought in another runner who was posted on first base, Irish led 3-0 after one.
