The Kansas City Chiefs attended the White House for the first time to celebrate their Super Bowl victory on Monday, a visit that also made up for the 2020 season when they missed out on a visit because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s been a long wait to stand before you,” Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid said. “Again, we are fired up. We missed the first one due to COVID-19, but we are here strong, Kansas City strong.”
The ceremony was in honor of the Chiefs beating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII back in February. President Biden is a Pennsylvania and Delaware native and roots for the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite he and his wife Jill’s passion for the Eagles, Biden was able to joke with the winning team.
“Jill still doesn’t even believe the Eagles player who acknowledged the holding penalty,” Biden said, referencing a controversial late-game call in Super Bowl LVII. “But I figure if the Kelce family can make it work … then there’s hope, there’s hope for the rest of us.”
Before the ceremony, Biden led the crowd in a moment of silence to mark the death Sunday of Norma Hunt, wife of the late team founder Lamar Hunt, saying he was sending “our condolences to the entire Hunt family.”
Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Super Bowl LVII most valuable player, was also acknowledged by the President for his ability to overcome an ankle injury and continue a newly founded dynasty in the NFL.
“You got a young quarterback named Patrick, boy can play, man,” Biden said. “Two-time MVP, comeback king, the only player in history with a winning record when down by 10 points or more. We saw him play with that high ankle sprain – another legendary chapter in the story of one of the greatest quarterbacks of his generation, and I predict of any generation.”
Players and coaches shared their generosity with the President, including Mahomes who described the entire visit to the White House as “surreal.”
“I mean, I’ve never been to Washington, D.C. – I’ve never even got to see from the outside, seeing the White House or any of the monuments or memorials,” Mahomes said. “And so, to be able to be here and see that, and see the history of this great nation that we have, it was really cool for me to just be here and be in the moment, and I don’t think I could ever really imagine it being as cool as it was.”
